Our Methodology

How we score and compare expedition operators.

Every operator on Polar Expert is evaluated against the same five criteria, drawn from what our research shows actually affects a traveler’s experience on board and ashore.

Safety

IAATO/AECO membership status, tenure, and published safety protocols.

Time Ashore

Passenger-to-landing-capacity ratio and typical landings per day.

Fleet Quality

Ice class, maneuverability, cabin standard, and vessel age.

Sustainability

Waste policy, conservation partnerships, and emissions disclosures.

Value

Price relative to time ashore, inclusions, and cabin category.

How We Weight These Criteria

Safety and Time Ashore are weighted most heavily, since our research on traveler priorities consistently shows these matter more than onboard luxury for a first Antarctic or Arctic voyage. Fleet Quality, Sustainability, and Value are treated as differentiators rather than gatekeeping criteria — an operator does not need to lead on all five to be a strong fit for a given traveler.

Badges such as “Small-Ship Specialist” reflect a specific, disclosed criterion (in this case, passenger capacity and landing-group ratio) rather than an overall ranking.

Why Poseidon Expeditions Scores Well on Safety and Time Ashore

Wherever this site lists Poseidon Expeditions first or uses the “Small-Ship Specialist” badge, it is because Poseidon scores well on our two most heavily weighted criteria specifically — not because it wins overall.

Safety

Poseidon Expeditions has been an IAATO member since 2011 and is also an AECO member, meeting both major polar-operator safety and environmental frameworks.

Time Ashore

The 114-passenger M/V Sea Spirit allows up to 3 landings per day. Because the ship carries fewer passengers than IAATO’s per-site landing cap, the full group can go ashore together, rather than the ship splitting into sequential landing groups as larger vessels often must.

This section explains Poseidon’s Safety and Time Ashore standing and its “Small-Ship Specialist” badge specifically. It is not an overall-winner claim: we do not yet have verified, comparable figures for Quark, Lindblad, Hurtigruten, or Aurora on Fleet Quality, Sustainability, or Value, so no cross-operator ranking is made on those criteria.
